The Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) in its efforts to encourage research and development in Science and Technology has taken the initiative to sponsor and organise an exposition in collaboration with public Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL) every two years. This exposition aims to display products, inventions and innovations produced by research from Higher Learning Institutions. This MoHE inspired exposition was held for the first time in 2001, with Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) as the event host. Subsequently, IPTAs appointed as hosts for this biannual event were Universiti Putra Malaysia (2003), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (2005) and Universiti Sains Malaysia (2007). In 2009, University of Malaya has been given the honour to collaborate with MoHE in organising this exposition.
In 2007, this exhibition was internationalised by opening its participation to Institutions of Higher Learning from outside the country. The 2007 event also included conferences in addition to the exposition, and was therefore given a new name: PECIPTA (Persidangan dan Ekspo Ciptaan Institusi Pengajian Tinggi Antarabangsa).
University of Malaya will continue using the name PECIPTA. For PECIPTA 2009 the theme and the main focus will be on value creation for research products.
